About this deal

Along with his brother, Joseph, and French confectioner August Claude Gaget, they developed the delicious taste of Rowntree’s ® in 1881.

Like the cocoa commodity chain, they highlight the significant, long-standing interconnections between York and the wider world. While the magazine included few illustrations in early editions, no doubt due to the expense entailed, these articles were invariably accompanied by at least one photograph displaying foreign locations and peoples.Henry Isaac by all accounts was a passionate man, he was able to inspire his workers and generated great loyalty, however he was involved in teaching at the adult school, an influential supporter of the Temperance movement and also ran a local newspaper trying to push a more liberal platform in local politics.

Despite this impulse to make connections between Rowntree workers across the globe, imperial hierarchies were firmly maintained within the pages of the magazine. There were, then, tangible manifestations of empire within the very walls of the Rowntree factory in the early 20th century. If you’re looking for a chewy, fruity-flavoured sweet, try the irresistible taste of Rowntree’s ® Fruit Pastilles.Alongside such stories of nerve-wracking encounters, Rowntree agents travelling in the empire brought home exotic artefacts to be exhibited in the factory. BBC History Magazine and BBC History Revealed are published by Immediate Media Company Limited under licence from BBC Studios Distribution. This dramatic tale was the first of many accounts in the CWM of the Rowntree firm's connections with the wider world, and in particular with the British colonies, reassuringly labelled in the magazine as "our 'Dominions beyond the Seas'".
