About this deal

Dell's hardware offering includes a wide range of 7420 clamshell and 2-in-1 SKUs from 1,275 to 2,950 Euros with 11th-generation Intel Tiger Lake U CPUs and the options of vPro, 8GB or 16GB permanently soldered RAM, and M.2 PCIe SSDs. The touchscreen and 4K option of the predecessor are omitted, while the FHD touchscreen is only available in the 2-in-1 system. The internal Intel Iris Xe GPU is responsible for displaying image content on the Latitude. This is used in two versions, of which the weaker variant works with 80 EUs. Its 3DMark results are not bad, even above-average, which is why the summary performance rating comes very close to the 96EUs variant.

Meanwhile, the only port on the right edge is a USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-A connector. The remainder of the right edge is dedicated to one of the two outlets for heat exhaust. Any object you place next to this port will get warm; it's great if you're right-handed and using an external mouse on a cold day, but not so much if it's hot out and you suffer from clammy hands. (Photo: Molly Flores) Our specific test model is a mid-range SKU with Core i5-1145G7 CPU and 512 GB SSD for around 1,400 Euros. New Intel Kaby Lake R processors have gone beyond what designers could previously imagine with a 15W budget, and the review model had an Intel Core i5-8350U quad-core 1.7GHz (Turbo 3.6GHz) processor under the hood, which is the equal of many desktop CPUs. In this test we use 100% on the CPU cores, monitoring their frequencies and chip temperature. The first column shows a computer’s reaction to a short load (2-10 seconds), the second column simulates a serious task (between 15 and 30 seconds), and the third column is a good indicator of how good the laptop is for long loads such as video rendering. There is no longer a 4K option for the screen, nor is there a touch for the clamshell 7420. On the other hand, our 400-nits IPS is just as bright, has wide viewing angles (Comfy View Plus), covers sRGB, and has a strong contrast of 1,800:1. The 4K panel of our former 7410 version was not missed; the high resolution is rarely needed for Office applications. This means that the measured response time is worse than the average of all tested devices (21.8 ms). I spend a lot of time testing enterprise laptops, but I nearly always test the top-end of specific models, as that’s what the vendors send for testing. But recently, I’ve been working with a more modestly configured version of the Dell Latitude 7420, and it’s a good reminder of just how much laptops have improved in the past few years. I had reviewed the previous version, the Latitude 7410, and this year's machine offers nice improvements, including the Intel 11th-generation Core (Tiger Lake) processors.

In addition to the great display, you get decent speakers, comfortable input devices, and pretty wide I/O, which not only offers two Thunderbolt 4 connectors, but also an optional SIM card slot, a MicroSD card slot, and more. On more complex, CPU-intensive tasks, the Latitude 9420 also offered class-leading performance, in part because its rivals used older 10th Generation processors or slightly slower Core i5 chips. In Maxon's CPU-crunching Cinebench R15 test, which is fully threaded to make use of all available processor cores and threads, the Dell again finished first. Standard wireless connectivity comprises an Intel Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) chipset with built-in 2x2 MIMO support and Bluetooth 5.1. The Latitude 7420 supports eSIM, so if you opt for the optional mobile broadband and your carrier supports eSIM as well, you won't need to use the physical slot. First responders and public safety organizations eyeing the Latitude 7420 may appreciate that the LTE version supports the dedicated, high-capacity FirstNet LTE bands. In idle usage, the average temperature for the upper side is 26.3 °C / 79 F, compared to the device average of 29.5 °C / 85 F. Buyers can choose between a 42 Wh or 63 Wh battery. Our model was equipped with the ExpressCharge battery with four cells and 63 Wh. Fast charging is detrimental to battery life, which is why it has to be selectively activated in the Dell Power Manager. After that, the battery charges to 80% in one hour. The Latitude lasted 14 hours at 100% in the Wi-Fi test with reduced brightness to 150 cd/m², which is a very good value. Only the Ryzen ThinkPad T14s can top this figure.

inch, FHD 1920 x 1080, 60 Hz, anti-glare, touch, 72% NTSC, 300 nits, wide-viewing angle, narrow bent The maximum temperature on the upper side is 37.1 °C / 99 F, compared to the average of 34.2 °C / 94 F, ranging from 21.2 to 62.5 °C for the class Office. The 8GB of DDR4 system memory and 256GB of storage is enough to run, but heavy users might find that storage gets somewhat snug after a few months use.
