About this deal

I started by making the ‘Green Eyecatcher’ with cucumber, spinach, water and honey. The feed tube was quite narrow, so the cucumber had to be halved to fit in the chute; even then, pushing it through required some effort. It produced a good amount of juice and minimal, relatively dry pulp. Similarly, the spinach went through well, leaving little residue inside the juicing unit – although this may have been a result of the water washing it through to finish. This proved slightly better, resulting in double the yield, but there was still an episode of wobbling. In fact, I had to turn the machine off and on again before it settled. As recommended in the instructions, I alternated juicing leafy greens with hard fruits, processing apples in-between. Although the resulting juice was clear of any kale stalks, I found some apple peel in there – a further sign of the disturbance caused. A bit of pressure was needed to juice the carrots and apples, especially when half of an apple ended up core side down. Two-thirds of a large cucumber made the juicer wobble a little, but it was sturdy enough to take it. The resulting juice was fibrous and tasty. Cleaning the Avance HR1922 is made easy because of the pre-clean rinsing function. By pouring water into the hollow plunger and turning the juicer on setting 2, you can rinse out the juicer lid, the steel blades and the micro-mesh filter. Before cleaning, the juicer can be rinsed out by filling the juicing unit with water and letting the motor run. This helps to pre-clean the juicing screw and the squeezing chamber.

A handy drip-stop means the juicing bowl can be sealed without spillage. No cleaning brush is provided, but that hardly feels necessary here, since the filter attached to the squeezing chamber can be easily cleaned with running water. To test the difference between the two speed settings, I decided to juice a similar amount of apple and carrot. It became apparent that setting 2 yielded significantly more juice, also producing more substantial froth. While setting 1 produced relatively clear juice with lighter foam, setting 2 resulted in a creamier, almost smoothie-like juice (if one could imagine a smoothie made out of apples and carrots) with a more intense flavour. Another slow juicer benefit is that the exact function of a slow juicer is designed to resemble the chewing motion of the human mouth. The mouth is very effective at extracting nutrients because it “pre-digests” food, which makes it easier for the body to absorb and metabolize nutrients during the rest of the digestive process. The Philips HR1889 Viva is the more affordable “slow”, or masticating, juicer from Philips. It sits alongside the pricier Avance HR1947.

While making several different juices, I had to empty the bin often. This wasn’t a massive chore, but it could prove annoying if you’re wanting to make several glasses of juice in one go – perhaps if you’re juicing for the whole family.Barely bigger than a compact pod coffee machine, and just as stylish, the Avance juicer is mini in more ways than one. It uses micro-masticating technology to maximise its yield (getting up to 90% of your fruit and vegetable into the glass), squeezing every last drop from foodstuffs from leafy greens to nuts. Starting from the completion of this transaction, you will automatically receive 1 brush head every 3 months, until you have notified us that you wish to pause or cancel your subscription. The Avance HR1922 is also dishwasher-safe – although after the pre-clean rinse you’ll unlikely need to use it.

Philips Avance masticating juicer? Can I juice bananas in my Philips Avance masticating juicer?

The drink was quite frothy, probably down to the fact that there’s no separator to reduce the foam on top. With honey added, the drink was inoffensive but not particularly pleasant – it would have benefitted from including fruit. The first thing you’ll notice about the Avance HR1922 is its compact form. This juicer has clearly been designed with appearance in mind. While many juicers consist of two integral but separate parts, the juicing unit and the pulp bin, Philips has built the pulp bin into the main body of the juicer. Three medium carrots produced a somewhat disappointing 100ml of juice. While the juice was clear, with no extra pulp, the carrot pulp in the bin was still moist enough for me to use in a carrot cake. While these amounts were sufficient in the context of the recipes, something about kale proved unnerving enough for the juicer to begin wobbling almost uncontrollably. Although for testing I normally use the most widely available sliced variety of kale, I decided to also test the Avance HR1922 with larger kale leaves. In addition to its compact size, taking up 296 x 250mm of your worktop space (without the jug attached), the Avance HR1922 looks pleasantly futuristic. The juicer’s shape is reminiscent of a large curvy bottle, further helped by the fact that most of its removable juicing parts are made of transparent plastic. I started by making a double portion of the Farmers’ Market juice from the recipe booklet, which contains strawberries, apples, carrots and some cucumber. Compared to a centrifugal juicer, a slow juicer squeezes more concentrated juice with more fiber and the juice yield is higher with a slow juicer. On the other hand, a juice from a juicer is ready faster, because you do not have to cut the fruit and vegetables, thanks to the large filling funnel.

The Viva HR1889 also comes with a colourful recipe booklet and instructions on finding and using the Philips Healthy Drinks app – a neat touch. Ordinary juicers extract juice by cutting fruit into pieces with sharp blades at a very high speed - sometimes more than 20,000 rotations per minute. In contrast, a slow jucier works at around 30 and 200 rotations per minute.

The drip-stop function on the spout was handy, although juice did continue to accumulate inside the unit, making clean-up a little messier. Juicing carrots was probably the noisiest process here, producing a sound akin to a chair being dragged across a hard floor. All the removable parts are dishwasher-safe – and they’re equally easy to clean by hand. This includes the micro-sieve, which is relatively small. The Philips Avance HR1922 is a high-end centrifugal juicer. It sits within the upmarket Avance range – which also includes the highly rated Philips Avance MicroMasticating Juicer HR1947 – versus the more affordable and less powerful Viva Collection. Masticating juicers – those that ‘chew’ fruit and veg rather than shred and spin it – have traditionally been unwieldy machines that require dedication when it comes to cleaning. However, the Avance is different, with much of its design geared towards minimal maintenance and ease of use.
