About this deal

With garden drainage as a growing issue in the UK there is no better time to get it fixed than now. It’s a good idea to do thorough research before setting out on any DIY garden drainage improvements because bad drainage is the same as no drainage. Space out the side drains at either 3 metre intervals (for clay soil) or at 7.6 metre intervals (for loamy soil); The Geo Textile Fabric will also stop, or at least dissuade, any local roots seeking out a greater water source. A root system can clog or even break a land drain system quite easily. Geo Textile fabric is a polypropylene mat used to suppress weeds and control soil erosion while allowing the controlled passage of water and air. Most drainage projects are not cheap. Before looking into any garden drainage ideas, we highly encourage you to confirm that your green space indeed has trouble draining water.

Severe drainage problems require piped drainage where perforated plastic pipe laid in trenches on a firmed 5cm (2in) bed of coarse gravel and covered with 10cm (4in) of gravel. Designing and installing piped drainage on a large scale is skilled and heavy work and is best accomplished by landscape or specialist contractor. You will need gravel in the trenches to replace the soil you remove; a pea shingle gravel no larger than 40mm is recommended. In the ground water takes the path of least resistance, and in heavy clay-type soil, stone is much easier to flow through. Water is attracted to the trenches and seeps through into the land drainage system. Garden drainage is a growing issue in the UK as more and more houses are built on clay soil with no consideration for water run off. With the recent years bringing storms, any areas which were going to flood have done so much to the frustration of the owners and users. A professionally installed drainage system lasts 15 to 40 years with proper maintenance. To ensure a long-lasting drain:

Most exterior drains cover an area 10' to 100' long by 6" wide, to a depth that slopes down 16" or deeper. Interior basement French drains are often the same length as the perimeter or slightly larger. Where Does The Water From Drains Go? Managing surface water run-off effectively and efficiently is a great way to improve drainage. All you need to do is incorporate sloping surfaces within your garden so that the excess water is directed to an area where it can be disposed of – for example, a surface drain or plant bed containing moisture-loving plants. Most garden drainage systems will consist of 2 main parts, water collection and water storage or disposal. Almost all drainage issues are caused by water not being able to move away as fast as it is collected. Of course, you don’t have to turn your drainage project into a creek bed. A simple swale is an effective and subtle way to control surface water. Obviously, it’s easier to create a swale before you seed or sod your yard, but if necessary, you can cut out the grass with a sod cutter and replace it when you’re done regrading.

The next stage is to make a series of slit trenches at right angles at the drainage pipes across the lawn with a spade at 400 mm centres, about 75 mm deep and fill them with a washed sand. It is important that the slits connect with washed stone over the main pipes – you should be able to feel the stone with the spade as you form the slit.

These small particles create a fairly water resistant layer which water struggles to permeate. If this is the main cause of your issues then changing the composition of the soil can sometimes rectify the issue. Scaffold planks can be hired from your local tool hire shop and used as a run to get the waste soil into position either in the garden or to a skip. Repeated running through lawn and garden with a wheelbarrow can leave a mess especially in ground which we already know is damp! unless it has been dealt with upstream by installing a drainage system to catch or divert the water, is naturally going to be a problem downstream. It's not really your neighbour's fault that An exterior footing drain requires excavating 4 to 6+ feet down to the footings and exposing the foundation walls. A waterproofing coating or membrane is applied to the foundation walls. Then, an exterior French drain with perforated PVC pipe is installed next to the foundation footing, and the excavation is filled with drainage gravel.Install a catch basin with a grate in the area where the water naturally pools. This forms the main pipe entrance, and the basin stops debris from entering the pipe. Standard homeowner’s insurance policies do not cover damage from flooding. Most policies only cover water damage from internal sources and not exterior groundwater. How Deep Should a drainage system be? Slope the French drain to carry the water down to its destination. Dig the trench across the waterlogged area and towards the soak away. you have placed the pipe in the trench, add more pea gravel until it is completely covered. The pea gravel around the To ensure that all applicable parts of your garden are drained, the most effective method of laying land drainsis to lay them in a herring bone pattern (see diagram). The pipes should be laid so that no point in the garden is any more than 2m away from a pipe. The maximum distance between pipes is therefore, 4m. The centre line, or spine, of the drain takes the water to the soakaway and all of the other lines, or ribs, feed into the spine. To set this formation out it is as well to buy a bag of sand and, after measuring the distances involved, sprinkle sand down each line of pipe you want to insert.

Add topsoil to the trench and dig a 1,2 metres-deep soakaway (a pit filled with hard core where water slowly soaks into the soil) at the lowest end of the main trench. Here are a few examples of how the most common garden drainage systems are set up. I have also included approximate pricing for the total job including materials and installation. Digging soakaways for clay soil drainage. Don’t try this under any circumstances! Digging a soakaway into clay soil will cause the hole to overflow and will lead to a flood! This will be more effective than aeration but still has its limits because the water still may have nowhere to go when it has gone through the top layer of sandy soil. The water “sneaks through” these holes and keeps the surface nice and dry. You can go with concrete, asphalt, or plastic, but, again, this drainage system’s efficiency leaves a lot to be desired. Subsoil and topsoil were mixed together during property construction, creating compacted soil that water has a hard time draining through. If you’re still undecided as to whether you need a garden drainage system or not, here are some reasons why you might need one: With a land drain there is a certain amount of flexibility in so much as the pipe level can be adjusted by some of the bedding.
