About this deal

Baked beans is a versatile dish that can be served with any number of mains and sides. Here are some popular options: With food prices rising and many households looking for ways to save cash, Asda's affordable Just Essentials range has proven a hit with customers in recent months. It was the cheapest of all the options I tried, and sadly the taste reflected that. After narrowly missing out on a Best Buy in last year's test, Morrisons beans have pulled ahead and earned a joint-first spot this year. Most supermarket own-brand baked beans fared relatively well, so wherever you shop, the own-brand is worth a go. • Co-op Baked Beans in Tomato Sauce (55p/400g) – 73% Which? said:"The texture of the beans and sauce were just right according to three quarters of our panel. But more than four in 10 thought them too weakly flavoured and not sweet enough." The make-up of the panel broadly represents the demographic profile of adults in the UK. Each brand of baked bean was assessed by 82 people.

Place on a baking tray, dust with flour and bake in the oven for 45-50 minutes, or until the loaf is golden-brown and sounds hollow when tapped. Aldi, Lidl, Asda and Tesco insiders share supermarket own-brand 'secrets' to help others save money The baked beans were assessed in February 2023 by a large panel of consumers who regularly buy and consume baked beans. The sauce tasted of tomato, which is always a good start. It was yet again a little watery for me, but not the thinnest sauce I'd seen during the course of the taste test.Next up was Aldi's Corale Baked Beans (45p/420g), with a score of 75%, which were declared the best value, with Which? saying: "Top marks for their appetising colour and texture. Although they didn't quite match up to Asda's beans on flavour, they're still a tasty option. These are the joint cheapest on test and offer excellent value for money." The highest scoring branded beans were Branston, which came a middling joint-fourth place and were second-most expensive. Heinz and HP came joint-fifth, ahead of only Sainsbury's, Co-op and M&S.

HP Baked Beans in a Rich Tomato Sauce - 73%. Ok for aroma and flavour, but below average on appearance. Almost half found the sauce too thin. 55p for 415g tin. Available from Asda. Which? asked a panel of consumers to blind-taste and rate 12 different brands of baked beans, from Heinz, Branston and KP to Aldi, Tesco, Lidl and more.Formerly the Midlands Vinegar Company [1] and Smedley HP Foods Limited, it was acquired by Imperial Foods, a division of Imperial Group. Edward Eastwood and his nephew Edwin Samson Moore established the Midland Vinegar Company at Aston, Birmingham in 1875. [2] HP is perhaps one of the lesser-known brands when it comes to baked beans, so I didn't have any expectations when it came to trying them. A bit of research afterwards revealed HP is owned by Heinz, but I wasn't able to tell this based on the flavour. This is best made with dried beans. Haricot, also known as white beans, are usual in commercial versions, but you can, in fact, use whatever you happen to have to hand, from kidney to cannellini. If, however, you are really pushed for time, you can use drained tinned beans (three 400g tins should do it), though they tend to go a bit mushy if cooked again. 2 Soak and salt (yes, really) the beans

Co-op Baked Beans - 71%. Over half of tasters found the sauce flavour too weak, and average elsewhere. 36p for 400g tin. Available from Co-op. Despite losing points on the texture, the taste was pleasant and fairly middle-of-the road. Overall, a decent option if you're looking to save cash on named brands.

From Our Partners

Baked beans are an affordable and delicious staple in many UK households, with millions of tins sold each year. Recent years have seen baked bean pizzas, baked bean crisps, and the (albeit more niche) baked bean tequila shot - proving we'll incorporate beans into our diets by any means possible. Beans no longer has to mean Heinz for cost-conscious shoppers, who preferred supermarket brands - some costing much less than half the price - to the market leader. Serve immediately or let cool completely and refrigerate until ready to serve. Can be reheated on the stovetop or in the microwave. Martin Lewis: Do you have a Power of Attorney?
