Corfu ( / k ɔːr ˈ f( j) uː/ kor- FEW, - FOO, US also / ˈ k ɔːr f( j) uː/ KOR-few, -foo) or Kerkyra ( Greek: Κέρκυρα, romanized: Kérkyra, pronounced [ˈcercira] ⓘ) [a] is a Greek island in the Ionian Sea, of the Ionian Islands, [1] and, including its small satellite islands, forms the margin of the northwestern frontier of Greece. [2] The island is part of the Corfu regional unit, and is administered by three municipalities with the islands of Othonoi, Ereikoussa, and Mathraki. [3] The principal city of the island (pop. 32,095) is also named Corfu. [4] Corfu is home to the Ionian University.

Corfu has a rich history that weaves a bewildering number of influences, with the Venetians, English, French and Russians all flourishing here and leaving their mark on the island. Corfu International Airport (or Ioannis Kapodistrias Airport) is served by both domestic and international airlines. The airport is 3km south of Corfu Town. The view as you come in to land is quite spectacular so book a window seat. There are a few overpriced cafes and not much else, so don’t plan on spending too much time there if you can help it.Kos island is the ideal choice when selecting a destination that the whole family will enjoy. There are cultural experiences to be had around every corner. The excellent selection of beaches makes for great, lazy days spending quality time together by the sea.

Corfu’s Secret Islands. Paxi and Antipaxi aren’t the only islands you can visit from Corfu. Less well known are the tiny idylls of Diapondiaoff the north coast – consisting of Erikoussa, Othoni and Mathraki islands (plus several uninhabited islets). Lazaretto Island, formerly known as St. Dimitrios, is located 1.1km (0.68mi) off the coast northeast of the city Corfu. Lazaretto has an area of 7.1ha (17.5 acres) and comes under the administration of the Greek National Tourist Organization. During Venetian rule in the early 16th century, a monastery was built on the islet and a leprosarium established later in the century, after which the island was named. In 1798, during the French occupation, the islet was occupied by the Russo-Turkish fleet, who ran it as a military hospital. During the period of British rule, in 1814, the leprosarium was once again opened after renovations, and following Enosis in 1864 the leprosarium again saw occasional use. [17] During World War II, the Axis Occupation of Greece established a Nazi concentration camp there for the prisoners of the Greek Resistance movement, [18] while remaining today are the two-storeyed building that served as the Headquarters of the Italian army, a small church, and the wall against which those condemned to death were shot. Corfu has always been a strategically important location at the entrance to the Adriatic and as such been occupied by many powers over the centuries, notably: For more space (or parking) you’re better off staying outside the city. In Garitsa Bay you’ll find the new boutique hotel Acanthus Blue as well as the 5-star old stalwart the Corfu Palace and Casino. At the far end of Garitsa is the 4-star Mayor Mon Repos Palace Art Hotel. The almost-impregnable design of the fortress was key in repelling Ottoman invasions in 1537, 1571, and 1716. On the west side of the island is Romeos Café, the type of restaurant that deserves multiple visits per holiday. That way, you can explore as much of the mouthwatering menu as possible. And don’t forget the beaches and swimming spots dotted around the island – not least the Canal d'Amour, where legend has it you’ll find your soulmate. Corfu island (or Kerkyra as it’s known in Greek) certainly knows how to seduce you.
