About this deal

The book is a pastiche of the classic Spanish novel Don Quixote by Miguel de Cervantes with many moments of comedy, but also offers reflection on matters such as life after a dictatorship, Communism, and the Catholic faith. Not only is this Greene doing a pastiche of Cervantes's Don Quijote - but it feels like he is spoofing his own work at times, he even mentions a whisky priest, bringing to mind his more famous novel The Power and the Glory. Indeed—especially when compared with the fuller version of similar themes (and the far richer central characterization) in The Power and the Glory. Much of this small book, then, consists of the witty yet weighty theological/political dialogues between Catholic and Communist: sipping wine, they compare the relative evils of Stalin and Torquemada; they contrast faith in God with faith in Marx; Monsignor Q. The way Greene worked in Don Quixote, Sancho, Rosinante, and the rest of the gang was worth the read even if you weren’t also moved by the spiritual story.

But Greene mixes village-comedy with philosophical repartee in a unique, grave-yet-sparkling fashion—and, while his usual fiction audience may find this even less satisfying than Dr. Greene’s is the doubt that breaks his character open, his the humanity that must confront the corruption within the Church.Though one time when she's forced into a social situation with some of their classmates, she briefly fantasizes about what would happen if she revealed their connection: "How much terrifying and bewildering status would accrue to her in this one moment, how destabilising it would be, how destructive. It is another theological novel from the converted to catholicism author who already had approached the theme with "The Power and the Glory", all set in a parallel "modern universe of the Cervantes classic. You talk about him at every opportunity, you pretend that my saints' books are like his books of chivalry, you compare our little adventures with his.

In this modern adaptation of the Don Quixote theme based on a novel by Graham Greene, Quixote is an old Spanish village priest who travels through Spain with his friend, Sancho, the village'. Monsignor Quixote’ (1982) by Graham Greene is a contemporary re-imagining/repositioning of Cervantes brilliant classic ‘Don Quixote’ – the story is still set in Spain, but now in the 1980’s rather than the 1600’s. I love Greene's work but not even for him will I sit through something that is not only dull and moving at snail's pace but also utterly unoriginal. With Sancho Panza, a deposed Communist mayor, his faithful Rocinate, an antiquated motorcar, Monsignor Quixote roams through modern-day Spain in a brilliant picaresque fable.

are touched upon, but not so heavy-handed as in some of his classic novels, although I must concede that the lengthy conversations between the protaganists can become a bit tedious.Rosalie Crutchley also makes a great performance as his house-keeper, but there is no Dulcinea here, only Rosinante. Quixote and Sancho are brought to a Trappist monastery where, sleepwalking and in delirium, Father Quixote rises from his bed at night, goes to the church, celebrates the old Tridentine Mass—all the time imagining he holds bread and wine in his hands—and then, in a last effort, administers communion to the Communist ex-mayor before sinking dead into his friend's arms.
