As much fun as we had playing Dead Men Tell No Tales, it still can fall into the same pits as other cooperative board games. The vast number of crises to keep under control can feel overwhelming, but the methods of doing so are easy to understand, making it a friendly experience for new players. The Kraken phase is added to the end of a player’s turn where a card is drawn from its deck, indicating how the Kraken will move or attack. Skeletons all carry either cutlasses (which can improve a pirate's battling ability) or grog (which can reduce their fatigue).

Sure, players have the chance to react to the random outcomes, but it still doesn’t help balance the game. The number of treasures players need to retrieve scales nicely with the number of players without increasing the difficulty. On the opposite side of this, the variety of mechanics, possible choices and resulting outcomes mean this is a very enjoyable experience for more experienced gamers looking for a deeper experience. It’s interesting to test different room combinations/play as all the characters/sample the full complement of item cards, and it will take multiple playthroughs to exhaust all possibilities.

Dead Men Tell No Tales – Skelit’s Revenge (DMTNT) is a co-operative pirate adventure where up to five players take the roles of scurvy sea pirates attempting to loot the ghost ship, The Skelit’s Revenge, its ghostly owner Captain Fromm and his skeleton crew. On the good side, each player got a very useful player aid, but there just wasn't enough usability to help this game excel. Final Score: 4 Stars – A fun romp through a burning ship that combines a lot of solid mechanics with some challenging gameplay. Games produced by Minion quickly became unavailable, and, with ownership tied up in probate court, there was no hope of seeing any of their games back on the market. While I do not mind some random aspects of a game, this entire game hinged on completely random variables.Libertalia looks like something my 10 year old can pick up but this game looks like it would be an ideal fit. However, it's not a bad choice for experienced cooperative gamers who are looking for something a little different, but still relatively light.
