A beginner usually has a ton of fire and motivation when they first start learning the piano, and this overcomes some of the hokeyness of earlier pieces. Most of the songs are ones I like and are very familiar melodies, and therefore easy to play at the correct tempo, speed, and timing without being expert at reading the music. The preparatory level in music is generally a 1 to 2-year process for adult students (longer for children). The course starts with playing with 5 music notes on each stationary hand, then gradually introduces new notes. But like primary school, we need to lay the groundwork and learn the basics before we get to a grade 1 level. Begins with a review of the concepts presented in Level 2, then introduces new pieces and lessons in new keys to prepare the student for more advanced studies.Some of the songs were rather boring and no fun, but initially, every beginner's purpose is to learn to play well, and that's why I learned all the songs, including the boring ones. A piece from the RCM Preparatory book might take two to three times as long to learn as a piece from the Alfred’s Adult book. If you’re only used to playing chords with your left hand, it’ll be a rude awakening when you attempt your first Baroque or Classical dance piece, where the left hand makes big leaps and follows its own path (instead of being led along by the right-hand melody).
