These two simple rules give rise to wonderful moments of glee as you get a slipstream bonus, anguish as someone slips into a gap in front of you, and an overwhelming urge to facepalm when you find yourself at the front too early on. Flamme Rouge: Peloton, the first expansion for Flamme Rouge, offers a chase group of four riders (pink and white rouleurs and sprinters) that allows the base game to be played with up to six players. While on the face of things a race game, Flamme Rouge is not simply about going fastest, it’s about timing, positioning, and managing your energy. In addition, there are 9 new track tiles and special cards that let you play with two different types of Dummy teams (AI riders).

To make matters worse there’s no slipstreaming, like a mountain climb, and these factors have a similar effect on the game as a mountain. It's one of the more ironic names for this bicycle race expansion, since some of the core improvements are about breaking from the pack. At first glance it looks great to jump ahead, but you have to remember you’re spending movement cards to get there. Peloton adds a slew of new tracks, riders, and variant rules, but as there are no significant gameplay changes I’m going to forgo the usual rules rundown and jump right in.In case you want the bigger crowd but don’t have 6 players, Peloton includes rules for NPC players, with two variants on how the teams are driven.

If you’re the 3 rd rider on the track you can lose out on that free movement even as every other rider around you jumps forward. There are supply zone tiles and a bonus tile which provide a minimum speed of 4 and still allow for slipstreaming. This is a very generous expansion as it provides the ability to now play with up to 6 players therefore there are two more player boards, 4 more riders, and all of the cards required. Yeah, sounds like they prioritized actually finishing the licensed ones to me by giving up on the other ones (and asking for additional money). As I mentioned in the opening paragraph, one of the key additions in Peloton is that you can now add a fifth and sixth player.

On my planned gaming nights, I am assured of a captive audience of four players: Myself, my wife, my cousin and my sister-in-law. Knowing (or assuming) that, this could be the perfect opportunity to slip-stream or burn an exhaustion card of your own. The new tiles are brilliant, especially the cobblestones and it makes the track look even better on the table. Each player essentially bids two cards for one of their riders, and the highest total gets to jump ahead (With 5-6 players, two riders get the jump).
