What an opener! Everything about it just sets the tone for the album perfectly. It's so dark and atmospheric. It's a song that just blows you away and it actually gets better every time I listen to it, it's jaw droppingly good. The guitars are outstanding, they overlap and envelope so brilliantly, the acoustics echoe and they all intertwined so well. Thematically, it sets the tone for the album as well. As Layne's dark subject matter starts from the outset, as he sings about original sin, ignorance with biblical references. Though most of the albums can be found on vinyl, be aware that some of them are pretty pricey! Why Did Alice In Chains Break Up?

They almost abandon the heavy, grungey, electric guitar, metal sound but they don't ditch it entirely. There's still traces of that, and they manage to blend the two sides of their sound perfectly - the heavy and soft dynamics. It's mainly acoustic driven, but the way they incorporate the electric guitars is brilliant and again, it really gives you a window into the soul and hellish mind of Layne Staley through the interesting, deep, thought provoking, pain filled lyrics. The flies in one jar would be overfed, while the flies in the other jar would be underfed. The flies that were overfed reproduced rapidly, but then died from overcrowding. The flies that were underfed managed to survive throughout the year. Concerning the anecdote, Staley said "I guess there's a message in there somewhere. Evidently that experiment had a big impact on Jerry." [13] The album was released in 1992—a time when grunge was still going strong but had already started to shift from its early days of pure aggression towards something more melodic and less abrasive.

An odd, short instrumental, "Whale and Wasp" should get more respect. Although the "whale" sound gets tiring after a while, the acoustic guitar is extremely well-executed and the middle part of the song is wonderful, with great work between the two guitars. A nice bridge between "No Excuses" and "Don't Follow".
