About this deal

In that, it's a satisfying resolution, but one that grapples with the complexities of our identities -- for example, Tolya is half-Polish and half-Ukrainian and fought for the Russians. Historical details about what happened to the Poles, Ukrainians, ethnic Germans, and how the various factions worked: the Russians and the NKVD, the Ukrainian nationalists, the pro-German Ukrainian Nachtigallen, the UPA, the Polish Resistance, and more. McCrina weaves together the stories of orphaned Tolya, first seen serving as a sharpshooter in the Soviet army, and Aleksey, leader of a Ukrainian paramilitary squad. The women characters are strong but secondary, and they range from a middle-aged resistance fighting nurse to two young and beautiful soldiers/partisans. He crossed the tracks and crouched for a little while on the embankment, catching his breath and waiting and watching.

With his help, Pip digs deeper, unveiling unsavory facts about Andie and the real reason Sal’s friends couldn’t provide him with an alibi. He’d heard that rank-and-file Resistance soldiers were being offered amnesty in exchange for officially joining the Front, but the only rank-and-file soldiers he’d seen were the six Zampolit Petrov had shot in the back of the head that morning in the station square. I think if I went in expecting more of a focus no the history rather than the story, I would've enjoyed Traitor a lot more. But Toyla doesn’t trust him, and being half Polish, he certainly doesn’t trust the Ukrainians will let him live once he’s executed the group’s mission. Normally, I steer clear of WWII books because the majority of them are just retelling the same story. It didn’t help that a few of them showed up in both timelines to thoroughly confuse me about who knew who.

For a second, while the crack of that last shot echoed away down the empty street, he and the girl just looked at each other. McCrina ( Blood Oath) illuminates the recent history of Galicia, a much-fought-over region claimed by both Poles and Ukrainians and occupied alternately by Germans and Russians in the mid-20th century. Bestselling author Elizabeth Wein describes Traitor as a piercing and bittersweet story of unflinching loyalty, and that is precisely what it is. But despite that, it’s a look at a little known part of World War II history that is well worth reading.

Neither character is particularly distinct or exciting, and it’s genuinely so difficult to keep track of what’s happening at any given time. Seventeen-year-old Tolya is a half Polish/half Ukrainian sniper in the Soviet Army stationed in the contested territory, where he must keep his Polish heritage a secret or risk his life. I was invested in the characters, and the twists that occurred made me even more curious about what would happen next. I flew through the book and don't want to spoil anything, but if this sort of book interests you I do think it is worth your time.
